After Google updated the Beta channel for its open source browser at the end of the past week, the company has now graduated version 4.0 from Beta to the Stable channel. Google Chrome 4.0 has been finalized and is now available for download for the general public. It was on January 21st, 2010, that Google released the last Beta development milestone of Chrome, namely version 4.0.249.78. And fact of the matter is that this is the same build string of version 4.0. “The stable channel has been updated to 4.0.249.78 for Windows,” revealed Anthony Laforge, Google Chrome program manager. Google Chrome 4.0 comes to the table with a range of improvements, including features requested by end users such as extensions.
“Extensions let you add new features and functions to your browser. Some provide one-click access to some of your favorite web applications like eBay and digg, or news and information sources such as NPR and Time.com. Others are useful tweaks for performing common online tasks such as browsing photos, getting directions or shopping,” revealed Nick Baum, Google product manager. “We previously launched extensions on the beta channel, and many new extensions have since been contributed by developers from all over the world. Now you can browse over 1,500 in our extensions gallery and install them on the stable version of Google Chrome.”
However, there are additional improvements. Build 4.0.249.78 of Google Chrome now aces the Acid3 test, indicating a strong support for modern web standards. Laforge explained that passing the Acid3 Test was possible because the search giant re-enabled remote font support. Another highly requested feature is bookmark synchronization.
“Bookmark sync is a handy feature for those of you who use several computers — say, a laptop at work and a desktop at home. You can enable bookmark sync to synchronize your bookmarks on all of your computers so that when you create a bookmark on one computer, it's automatically added across all your computers. This means that you won't need to manually recreate the bookmark each time you switch computers,” Baum added.
Google Chrome 4.0: Fastest OS X browser by 34 per cent. But despite its 4.0 moniker and its impressive speed, Chrome for Mac is still riddled with bugs. Big ones, like those spiders in Eight Legged Freaks, only even more hellacious. OldVersion.com provides free software downloads for old versions of programs, drivers and games. So why not downgrade to the version you love? Because newer is not always bett.
Baum also revealed that Chrome 4.0 was no less than 42% faster than Chrome 3.0 while offering 400% more performance compared to version 1.0 of Google’s open source browser, according to Mozilla's Dromeao DOM Core Tests.
Laforge enumerated the features and security fixes added to Chrome since the introduction of version 3.0, including:
- Extensions,
- Bookmark sync,
- Enhanced developer tools,
- HTML5: Notifications, Web Database, Local Storage, WebSockets, Ruby support,
- v8 performance improvements,
- Skia performance improvements,
- HTTP byte range support,
- New security feature: 'Strict Transport Security' support,
- Experimental new anti-reflected-XSS feature called 'XSS Auditor.'

I am running Google Chrome 4.0.249.89 and noticed a weird behavior with it. It loads but I get this error:
Notice that there is an absence of commonly used pages in the display itself and displays the error message instead.
Has google chrome ceased to function after a certain limit of bookmarks?
I have tried the
setup --rename-chrome-exe
trick which did not work. I just don't want to lose my bookmarks.t0mm13bt0mm13b

What may be an option, is to back up the
Bookmarks
file and then reinstall Chrome from scratch in case one of the files in your profile is corrupt.- Backup Bookmarks file from
%localappdata%GoogleChromeUser DataDefault
- Uninstall Chrome
- Manually delete the folder
%localappdata%GoogleChrome
- Reinstall Chrome
- Copy the Bookmarks file back to
%localappdata%GoogleChromeUser DataDefault
EDIT - in response to comment regarding installation of BitDefender:
Try this in BitDefender (expert mode):
- Click Antivirus | Shield | Advanced Settings
- Add Chrome to the Exclusions,
C:Documents and SettingsTomLocal SettingsApplication DataGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe

There is a difference between bookmarks and most visited pages, that appear on New Tab page. First ones you can see on the toolbar right under the address bar (as in your image), the other ones are generated from the history of your browsing.
Bookmarks are stored in
%localappdata%GoogleChromeUser DataDefaultBookmarks
. Most visited pages are not stored, but generated from %localappdata%GoogleChromeUser DataDefaultHistory*
filesMy recommendation is that you should save your entire profile, i.e.
%localappdata%GoogleChromeUser DataDefault
folder and copy it to safe location. Since it seems like Google Chrome crashes in your computer does not depend on your profile, you can try to recover your bookmarks/most-visited-pages on friend's computer. Meanwhile you can also try to fix the problem with Google Chrome:- Uninstall Google Chrome
- Remove entirely this folder:
%localappdata%GoogleChrome
- Search your registry for string 'Chrome' and delete any related keys and values
- Reboot
- Update your antivirus database and scan your computer for viruses
- Download fresh version of Google Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome. Do not reuse old installer - it may be infected by a virus.
- Install it and try running
If this still doesn't help, then the problem is way to complex and requires an attention of an IT professional (with remote control or similar). If you have such friends -- let them try to help. Hiring professional is typically quite expensive, I would then recommend using another browser or reinstalling Windows.

Did you install any experimental addons that use the new Chrome process or history experimental API's? These can change the behavior of the new tab or history functionality.
Perhaps you installed an add-on that's using these new API and it has broken the Chrome install until its uninstalled?
I'm struck that your error is with the new tab functionality and it follows closely the release of these experimental API's.

1- It's just a simple trick which helps you save your bm every time . Enable sync in Google Chrome. Google has a way to kill specify crash function, not all your chrome . So, you won't lose your bookmark that easily :)I've crashed dozen times because IDM's integration.
